Goniometer - Principles, Uses & Types

A goniometer is an instrument used to measure angles or to rotate an object into a designated alignment. It features two arms that converge at a central point, along with a calibrated circle or semicircle for angle readings. Complete set of goniometers is everything you need to evaluate a range of motion. Ideal for physiotherapists, home use, and students.

The word goniometry comes from two Greek terms: gonia, which translates to "angle" and metron, meaning "measure". Thus, goniometry involves measuring angles, specifically those formed at human joints by the body's bones. To obtain these measurements, the examiner aligns the components of a device known as a goniometer along the bones situated just above and below the joint in question. Goniometry can assess both a specific joint position and the overall range of motion present at that joint.

Uses -

  • Orthopedics: Goniometers measure joint range of motion, a practice known as goniometry.
  • Crystallography: Goniometers are utilized to determine the angles between crystal faces.
  • Astronomy: Initial goniometers assisted in calculating the positions of celestial objects in relation to Earth.

Functionality

  • Align the goniometer with the angle intended for measurement.
  • Adjust the goniometer's arms to match the broadest sections of the angle.
  • Observe the angle reading on the graduated circle or semicircle."
